Access: Take forestry road R0-461 (25) West. The Wemotaci community is 115 km (71 mi.) northwest of the La Tuque sector.

Population : 1 500

Toponymy :

The word WEMOTACI appears to be derived from the name of a mountain. According to the elders, the word denotes the wave-like forms created by the wind on the snow. Another definition, “place of observation,” refers to the mountain behind Wemotaci. In earlier times, Wemotaci was a place of assembly to celebrate various events of cultural significance. With its splendid natural beauty, the site is also ideal for nature observation.

Description :

The Atikamekw community is located on the banks of the Saint-Maurice across from the village of Sanmaur. A recently built bridge connects the two communities.

Accessibility :

Wemotaci can be accessed by forestry road R0-461 (25) West, as well as by train or by air. A landing strip accommodates bush planes; seaplanes can land on the river. The community is an important juncture in the regional snowmobile and ATV circuit. Snowmobile trail # 83 crosses the territory.

Main attractions :

Traditional Pow Wow

The Wemotaci traditional pow-wow is a memorable event. Since 1997, its first edition, the pow-wow has brought together growing numbers of people and played host to artists from as far afield as Ontario, Saskatchewan and Washington State. The various colours of the ceremonial clothing symbolically precede the hues of fall. The pow-wow is usually held on Labour Day weekend.

Rivière Saint-Maurice

The Saint-Maurice is one of nature’s treasures, offered freely to all vacationers. This huge territory accommodates outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds—hikers, ATVers, snowmobilers, boaters and campers. Fishing is also possible.
